Talisman and Folk Magic

Original 3 Prints: Talisman is series created to explore the power of symbology and action through the creation process. Each pairing of animal part to plant was a combination of the natural elements that have been used in folk magic for centuries. Folk magic is not singular to one religious practice and is practiced in everyday rituals and habits. The idea is that we create significance in everyday objects and those objects through memory or belief have power over our lives. Everyone has a lucky piece of jewelry, keychain, pair of socks, etc. Those who are not tied to physical objects may be tied to routine. The power of these objects or routines is not inherent it is a psychological assignment. However, these beliefs give people hope. The prints themselves were carved linoleum blocks printed on mulberry paper using water based printing inks. The carving of each image was an act of bringing the symbols to life in a small print series where action combined with symbol give each piece significance.

Other: This seems to be an ongoing project diving deeper into the everyday and fantastical images of religion and magic we keep in our everyday lives. Whether for comfort, belief, faith, or a sense of power, these objects allow us to gain a perceived control of our surroundings. The combined works are in progress as is the final artist statement.
